THE ROLE OF PHILANTHROPY IN PROMOTING EQUITY

During the project, the foundation gained insights into how communities in our country and around the globe tap into local assets and resources to promote sustainable economic and community development. In turn, FMS developed a deeper appreciation for how philanthropy can be a powerful tool in unleashing human potential and creativity, and it was introduced to the concept of community philanthropy—a concept that the foundation believes has great significance for the future of philanthropy in the Mid South.

For the Mid South to effect change and to move beyond its status quo, concerned citizens and organizations must agree that the time has come for the region to progress and share and leverage its resources. The foundation believes that philanthropy has an important role to play in making this possible.

To this end, FMS encourages philanthropy in the Mid South to focus its considerable resources and commit itself to tackling the entrenched, seemingly intractable challenges that compromise the well-being of the region's citizens and leaves too many of them in poverty and disconnected from opportunity.
